Grumpy Cat Is

The breakout star of Fridayâs BookExpo America at the Javits Center wasnât the actor Jim Carrey, former First Lady contender Ann Romney, or NBA all-time leading scorer Kareem Abdul-Jabbar. It was none other than meme sensation Grumpy Cat, who drew a line of hundreds of fans, some of whom waited more than two hours just to take a photograph with the cantankerous feline.
âThere are 10,000 librarians here and just one cat. Of course the line is this long. This is the most exciting thing I have done all day,â said Connecticut librarian Casey Caplante. âIâm going to be a grumpy librarian by the time I finally get to see the cat.â
The line to meet the Internet sensation started at 1:15 p.m., almost two hours before the cat was due to make her appearance. Just 15 minutes into the event, the crowd was so anxious to get close to Grumpy Cat that the BEA organizers called for two extra security guards to maintain the peace.
Grumpy Cat, whose real name is Tardar Sauce, managed to sleep through most of her event, waking only when her owner, Tabatha Bundesen, picked her up from her plush bed to make her famously grumpy face, a trait caused by feline dwarfism.
âPeople in line keep telling us she is their spirit animal,â explained Sarah Malarkey, the Executive Editorial Director of Chronicle Books, the imprint that will publish âGrumpy Cat: A Grumpy Bookâ in the fall.
Chronicle was loath to reveal where the famous cat and her handlers were staying while in the city. âWe really canât reveal that. Last time she was in New York someone broke down crying when they saw her,â Ms. Malarkey said.
